We've all been there.

You buy the most beautiful, softest, most expensive cat bed you've ever seen. You set it down, sprinkle a little catnip on it, and wait for your cat's approving glance. And what does he do? He walks around it three times, gives a disdainful sniff… and five seconds later plops down contentedly in the empty Amazon box you were about to throw away.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cats.

This isn't coincidence or pure cat stubbornness (though that certainly plays a role). Cats naturally feel safest in small, enclosed spaces. A cardboard box gives them exactly that feeling of "I can't see anyone from here, but I can see everything."

Plus: cardboard is wonderful to scratch in, keeps them warm, and is perfect for sneaking away into.

Fun fact by the way: Cats are the only mammal that can't taste sweetness. So when you think "look how delicious this is!" and your cat looks at you like you're crazy… they're literally right. Sweetness simply doesn't exist in their taste world.

But anyway, back to that bed. A good cat bed really needs to be two things at once:

• Safe and enclosed enough (that box feeling)
• And comfortable enough that your cat actually chooses it over the Amazon box.
